Jacques Delors (1925-2023)

It is with deep sadness that we learned of the death of Jacques Delors, an emblematic figure in European politics and a fervent advocate of European unity.

His lasting legacy as President of the European Commission from 1985 to 1995 will remain etched in the history of Europe.

Jacques Delors was a visionary, a builder who shaped the European Union as we know it today. Under his presidency, Europe took giant steps towards economic and political integration, laying the foundations for monetary union and the euro, which have transformed Europe's economic landscape.

His role in shaping European cohesion policy was crucial. He understood the importance of reducing regional disparities and promoting balanced development across Europe. Thanks to his vision, European structural funds were created, supporting projects in less developed regions, promoting solidarity and shared prosperity.

Delors was a man of conviction and dialogue. He worked tirelessly to bring the Member States closer together, insisting on the importance of the single market and promoting the idea of a Europe united in its diversity. His inclusive approach and commitment to European democracy have been exemplary. If the Lille-Kortrijk-Tournai Eurometropolis exists today, it is thanks in particular to the impetus of Jacques Delors - a legacy that lives on in the values of rapprochement and cohesion that define the European Groupings of Territorial Cooperation (EGTC).

Today we mourn the loss of a great European, but we also celebrate his immense contribution to building a stronger, more united and more prosperous Europe. Jacques Delors leaves behind an indelible legacy that will continue to inspire future generations.

The partners of the Lille-Kortrijk-Tournai Eurometropolis and their teams' thoughts go out to our President, Martine Aubry.

We send our most sincere condolences to his family, friends and all those who have been touched by the loss of this great man.
