Islands on the Lys: Eurometropolis selected as a pilot project for b-solutions
The Lys canal, which forms part of the border between France and Belgium, has led to the creation of cross-border islands. These islands are physically attached to municipalities on one side of the border, but legally belong to the other. This situation creates administrative, legal and operational challenges for the management and development of the islands, as neither country currently has full jurisdiction or the capacity to act on them.
To find possible solutions to this problem, the Eurometropolis was recently selected as a pilot territory by the b-solutions project, which addresses legal and administrative obstacles to cross-border cooperation in Europe.
Ultimately, the aim of this pilot action is to prepare and sign a cooperation agreement between French and Belgian stakeholders in order to jointly manage and promote the cross-border islands of the Lys.
The b-solutions project is promoted by the European Commission's Directorate-General for Regional and Urban Policy (@DG REGIO) and managed by the Association of European Border Regions (AEBR).
