The members of the EGTC platform, driven by the Committee of the Regions, met in Brussels on 17 and 18 February 2014.
During this 4th annual assembly, which was dedicated to the position and the role of the EGTCs within the EU 2020 Strategy, Mr Stef Vande Meulebroucke, director-general of the Agency of the Eurometropolis, pointed out that since the first assembly in Lille in 2011, the position of the EGTCs has evolved significantly: from "rare species" in the eyes of the European Commission to organisations tolerated in the European landscape and finally to entities that are currently still in the acceptance phase.
He is of the opinion that there is still lots of room for progress where their role is concerned and therefore encourages the European Commission to convince the member states and the regions throughout all of its own programmes of the real added value of the EGTC’s, not only for the local implementation of Europe 2020, but also for the development of European programmes and their transversal, transnational and multilevel realisation.
He requested the European Commission to provide financial incentives for the member states and regions – in particular through its programmes – so as to be able to make more efficient use of EGTC’s as "assets in the field" in the future.
